Grisanti Spurs NFTA Funding Petition

State Senator Mark Grisanti (R-60th District) says he knows many people in his district in the Tonawandas need NFTA bus routes to get to work or other errands. He is also aware that the transit agency faces rising costs and less state aid which have lead to a proposed budget which cuts routes and staffers including transit police.

That is why Grisanti launched a petition drive seeking 1,000 signatures to ask the Governor and legislature leaders to restore and provide $10 Million dollars for the NFTA. Grisanti points out that the state compensated the MTA or Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City with $250 Million dollars when the payroll tax was eliminated. He says there were also past bailouts for the MTA.

State Study Requested for NFTA

State Assemblyman Sean Ryan is now calling on the state's Authorities Budget Office to study the operations of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority as that agency wrestles with a nearly $15 Million dollar deficit and possible service cuts and layoffs.

Ryan says he agrees with calls from other lawmakers to seek more funding to help the struggling NFTA. But he also feels there should be a review to make sure it is focused on its core mission of providing bus and light rail service. Ryan says the agency's board may be too distracted by other issues like what to do with waterfront property and how to operate the under-utilized Niagara Falls International Airport. Ryan wants the study to be completed before the service cuts take effect in April.

The 144th District Assemblyman also questions the leadership of the NFTA board. So far there is no response from the NFTA.
